Played on Sunday 14th at Nikko Golf Park Harel and Wakasu Links, Tokyo, today:
46+46 = 92 at Harel. Nothing working particularly well and didn't find the middle of the driver at all. A few blow-up holes, 4 OB's in total didn't help. I found the course a bit tight and can't say that it's a favourite. On my 18 handicap I made 36 points on the Stableford, which brought me in 2nd behind Jonathan. It was the first time my new Rife putter had been out and I was keen to see if I hadn't completely wasted my money. 39 putts...hmm...the jury is still out
Indulging in a bit of back-to-back golf I went to Wakasu Links today with a mate and Fred Varcoe (he of Gaijin Golfer's Metropolis article-writing fame) and his friend. Had a great day at the seaside course, shooting 42+42, 84, for a win over the opposing team, with a few stinging drives, arrow-like pitches, and even a 30ft, snaking putt to halve a hole. I found the control I had lost yesterday with the driver, and, although there were some errant irons, the putting, particularly, showed signs of improvement
In short, the jury is in on the fate of the new putter, and says it will stay!
Love back-to-back golf days. I think it really does help my game. I wanna play moooore!!!

Shot 42+56 at Nikko Harrel yesterday off the whites.
Front nine analysis:![]()
Stuck with the 3-wood off the tee on most holes and hit it great.
Irons were generally good.
Didn't have to chip much and putting was adequate.
Back nine analysis:![]()

Missed too many fairways
Approach shots were erratic
Putted poorly.
Couldn't get anything going
Verdict:![]()
Need to play more often
Struggle with courses I play for the first time
Must improve consistency
Boo hoo, I shot an 86,, boo hoo I shot an 92,
, boo hoo I shot an 98,
. Come on now I'd be happy with any of those scores.
Sorry for the rantI had a very disappointing round at the MILF course on Sunday. The front was a disaster, not a course to have a bad day on off the tee. Very, very narrow and unforgiving front. So you higher handicappers beware. On the front nine I don't think finished with the same ball I teed off with. Can't blame the course entirely, my swing from tee to green was a mess. Some may have been saved on other courses, but there was no chance here. Fairways were tight and the rough was tighter. OBs usually on both sides. And only a few holes had drops (yellow tees) on the fairway, so you had to hit another one, and another one, and another one... etc. ( you get the idea) I haven't had this bad a nine in a long, long time. I guess it was to be expected as I"m going though some swing changes and I thought I had embedded them through the 4 driving range sessions during the week.. I guess not.
This is where I think having a lunch break was good.... an hour later I came back out and put the previous 9 behind me. Par on the first hole, double on the second and chipped in for par from the sand... after that it didn't matter. That one shot from the sand about 20 yards out, came out high and soft straight at the pin and rolled a few feet to the pin in the cup. Overall in the back I did manage to avoid the OBS, even hit a few fairways, had some decent approaches and made some putts. So the final damage.... 106 (+9 HC)
60 (Out)
46 (IN)
32 putts.
As for the rest of the facilities, the outer building looked a bit more run down than the home page pictures, the inner facilitates were up to par.... friendly staff, very nice locker room, lunch was typical JP fare, spacious and nice bath, had a party afterwords which included food, drinks and some food prizes. The total price including everything was 20K. (+2K in lost balls)
I enjoyed Kita-ku Golf tounament at Akabane GC on river-bed of Arakawa-river. It was on river-bed , therefore, it is really narrow.
I gave some balls for river-fish.
Prize was O-tsuka Bon Currey for souvenirs.
Good for Tanshin-funin.
No excuse, but worst score in this year: 53,48
But I walked a lot with pull-car. Good exercise
I do best on 28th.
Kondo.
I think I'm just speaking for the majority of us that shoot over 100.
So those who struggle to break that mark. We want to hear from you too!
Please don't get me wrong I'm not minimizing your difficulties, it must be frustrating at any level to shoot a number of strokes over your HC/expectation. I guess I just want to hear more from the "normal" golfers. So here is your chance speak up!

Played Harel in Tochigi with the group of 8 yesterday.
Out in 43
In in 38
Total 81 with 30 putts.
I did hit 3 OB which was were costly.
Started with a birdie (known as the kiss of death where I come from) and was rolling along at -1 until #5 when despite being in position A; I hit a dreadful 9iron that lead to a triple. Reality check!
Started the back with a birdie on 10 and was -1 after 3 holes when I decided to pump another OB for a double (deja vu anyone) but managed to birdie 18 to finish on a bit of a high. Still lots of work to do but it appears that progress is being made. Was pleased with my wedge play which has been an issue for a couple of years.
Sadly, it is rare when all aspects of the game are working!
Back to the range!
Jonathan
Had a great time up at Nikko last Sunday. My driver was working pretty good, except that I was allowing to much for a fade that didn't come all day. My putter was working pretty well, but I was having real trouble with my short irons. Maybe next time.
47 out
46 in
34 putts with 2x3 putts
2 or 3 one shot penalties (local rule) and no OB's.
Had some classy lies in the bunkers, one from the tee where it went straight in underneath the lip and only half the ball was showing. It was the only bunker that had soft sand in it.
Overall, 5 over, and a lot of if only's.
I like the saying... So does that mean if we share our stories here we can half our score. :-)
Again sorry about the rant, I was coming off a few good rounds and then really punished on Sunday. I guess I wouldn't have commented so negatively if I had a decent round as per my own expectations. I guess I want to hear from a few more "real" golfers like me who I assume are the majority, that struggle with breaking 100... Misery enjoys company.
Peter, you're a god mate! You could raise the Titanic!![]()

Hey Peter that's a great story there, what golf is all about. Special moments that make you realise what a great game it is, and how nice life is even when things don't always work at as we planned and hoped. Thanks for sharing it.
Congratulations to your friend on his hole-in-one, Peter.![]()
Oh Peter ! Omedetou to your friends.
You become busy.
You will be invited "Hole-in-One Compe" and will have big party and
present from him.
GREAT DAYS FOR YOU.
Now, it is your turn.

Must be the luck of the Irish (assuming). I need to play with you Peter! I'm sure playing with you brings out the best in your playing partners.
I'm usually pretty happy with a straight drive in the middle of the fairway, a nice close approach shot, a chip-in or a long putt that drops. But a HOLE IN ONE that would be just fantastic!

Peter ! You are right.
I am sure he has a confidence for his future.
You and partner recognize his works. That's makes him a man.
In Japanese, we say: Otoko ni naru.
Otoko is not common man, but strong, alone, warm-hearted and really like a calm gentlemen.
You were really good peartner .

Save for highly aerated greens that sometimes made it feel like you were a giant putting on the surface of the moon, my first trip to Windsor GCC with a group of Gaijin Golfers that got together on these very pages was a lot of fun.
Started out with a pleasing 43, but came in with a disappointing 49.
Actually.... This seem to be my trend of late; a nice start followed by a disappointing finish. Still trying to figure out whether it is due to post-lunch stiffness, lack of stamina, eating too much for lunch, or having, as they say in Japanese, nomi no shinzo (the heart of a flea - meaning that I choke under the pressure of a good first half).
I also wonder whether it had something to do with my having been "button boy" (the guy controlling the cart)....![]()
Had a lot of fun playing at Otsuki Garden GC in Yamanashi yesterday with 7 other members. It was a great day topped off with a delicious BBQ at Matt's
Shot 89 playing from the blue tees:
Out 46
In 43
30 putts
1 monster birdie putt nailed on the par 4 15th.
This is a tough course to play from the blue tees first time out. A ridiculous amount of OB's in our group
Still working through some swing changes and it was tough most of the time not trying to think too mechanically. Lots of very poor tee shots![]()

Played at Narita Golf club on Saturday.
Almost no space between holes so you need ato be safe!
I did not review the course because the issue of other peoples balls flying over head and into the group (3 landed right by us over the 18 holes), I will not play here again.
Shot 109, but after the disaster that was Nikko I thought this was ok.
Have convinced the wife to go away for a romantic weekend. I will be staying and playing here on Sunday:

Where we will take it in turns to use the pink clubs![]()
Glad you made it back safely!
You played Narita GC (ナリタ)right?
Not 成田 GC
Same name but one written in katakana and the other kanji.
One reasonable and the other bloody pricey!

It was the cheap one (of course).
It was very noisy.
The proximity of other golfers, who were at least as bad as me was, for the first time in Japan, quite worrying.
As the local folks say, Peter.... Ni-su pu-re-!
79 - nice score!![]()
Peter !
Su-barashi---!, Congrtulation.
I think your Age-shoot is a little bit later ?
Keep this score by this age.
