The team of Marcus and Massie, "The Brisbane Bandit," scored 47 Stableford points on Day One of the Spring 'Siberian' Shootout to lead a trio of teams by four points but they didn't count on Mother Nature's Saturday surge, blanketing the course with snow to deny the leaders victory … for a few weeks at least!
Riding a superb short game, Marcus off 7 and Chris off … er, a very generous 24 for a team handicap of 8, posted four birdies on the day, including their last two holes to lead the tournament after the opening round.
Four points back on 43 points were the teams of Grant and James, Jonathan and Mats and Brian and Greg.Matt N and Jerry were a further shot back.
Under cloudy, cool skies on April 16 at Windsor Park Golf and Country Club, forward tees and front pins provided plenty of chances for teams to go low, and although no teams scored eagles, a few had two-putt birdies.
Jonathan (Captain Canuck) and Mats led the birdie binge with five and Jonathan added a long drive on hole 6 to his team's prize kitty. Other long drive winners were Matt N, Jerry and Mike Haney with a bomb on 12.
Near pins were won by Jason, Matt N, Marcus and Nick/Russ.
A big thank you to all those golfers who donated prizes.
It was a very international event with 28 golfers from 12 countries -- America, Australia, Canada, Chile, England, India, Ireland, Japan, New Zealand, Scotland, SWEDEN (don't forget Sweden!) and Wales.
And a big Happy 50th Birthday to Dean!
A date for Round Two is under consideration and will be announced shortly.
Full results after Day One were:
47 points Marcus and Chris
43 Grant and James, Jonathan and Mats, and Brian and Greg
42 Matt N and Jerry
40 Russ and Nick, Frank M and Dave
38 Jason and Mike, Harley and Tak
