The Snow Swept Stableford Challenge
OK. Some of us are nutters. Despite several forecasts warning us of snow for the Tochigi area, 11 of us ventured out in the early hours of Saturday morning for a round at Tsutsujigaoka CC. It was snowing a bit before we left Tokyo but that didn’t deter us as we thought, what the hell? Let’s go anyway.
The Competition:
Congratulations to Greg who played some excellent golf in tough conditions and shot 89 off a handicap of 24(?!) and won our stableford comp with an impressive 43 points.
You are now officially on handi-watch.
1st: Greg 43 points
2nd: Spike 38 points*
3rd: Gordon 37 points
4th: Brett 37 points
5th: Grant 35 points
6th: Edward 34 points
* Next time, please calculate your stableford points before the prize money gets handed out.
Near Pins:
Greg
Brett
And well done to Brett for breaking 80. An impressive feat considering he was borrowing everyones else's clubs all day and it was only his third time to ever see snow nevermind play golf in it.
Gross scores:
Brett 79
Grant 81
Edward 86
Greg 89
James 97
Spike 104
Gordon 107
Others?
Some photos:
If your golf clubs are safely stored away until spring time then you’ll probably have a good chuckle at the sight of some of the photos below.
Here are a few of the guys just before tee off:
Armed with orange and yellow golf balls, we all headed off to the first tee (hole 10)
Here’s Edward smacking one down the middle.
For sure, we got very lucky as whilst it snowed for most of the day, it was a fairly light shower most of the time and only started settling on the ground for the last couple of holes.
After lunch (hole 1):
Greg and James
Brett
It looks worse than it actually was - honest!
Hole 5:
Greg and myself had a little matchplay game against Brett and James and were 4 up with 5 holes to play. In the video below, James is putting for a par to halve the hole and keep the match alive. Before you watch, please turn the volume up loud and listen out for his partner Brett’s words (?) of encouragement at the 29-30 second mark.
Well done James for making the putt with the pressure on.
@ Brett: Next time, please keep the pressure in!
Hole 9:
OK. The conditions were getting a bit tough here. Orange ball essential for that tee shot.
I’m not sure about everyone else, but the guys in my group, Greg, James, Brett and myself had a blast and there was some excellent golf being played despite the conditions.
15 minutes after we finished our round:
Looking forward to the next snow swept stableford competition!![]()
Cheers Grant, the day was a blast!
Didn't feel that cold when it was snowing.![]()
The last few holes were an adventure when it started to blanket down!
Here's a few more pics.

Waiting to tee off while the pro gave lessons on the tee!!
The 10th hole
I lost a beloved yellow Doraemon ball in the creek, and the next 8-iron shot in the drink for a well-rounded and appropriate snowman!![]()
