JOHN Daly has stormed out of the Australian Open -- and maybe Australian golf for the last time.
The dual major winner quit after hitting a series of shots into the water at the 11th hole at The Lakes.
Daly, who was seven over at the time after calling a penalty on himself at the 10th hole, launched up to seven balls into the lake that lines the 11th fairway.
After apparently claiming he had run out of golf balls, he shook the hands of playing partners Craig Parry and Hunter Mahan, and left the course in a courtesy car.
Australian Open officials immediately condemned his behaviour and suggested the enfant terrible of world golf had played the tournament for the last time.
hahahahahha...what a legend![]()
The Icelandic Polar beer
Big John, what are you up to?
I have to see that though! If I find a vid on YouTube, I'll post it here.
How's the etiquette???![]()
I would never put 7 balls in the lake by the 11th because by the time I got there I wouldn't have 7 balls left. Anyone else played this course? One year I got to play it on the Monday after the final round the day before, still set up and playing off the plates. Although the layout was a little different in those days it was a "ball expensive" day. I'm on John's side( ok - no I'm not).
I always drive by real fast Peter ...
Love his excuse, "Sorry guys, I've run out of balls, see you next year on the Troppo Tour."![]()

Found the portion where he hits his last shot in and shakes hands with his partners before
walking off.

Here's another video:
Some of the commentary from the crowd is quite funny.
"Have a stubby!"
A few moments later on ball 5 (I think)
"Go left you dick"
Meltdown of the year!![]()
He wasn't even close to making it in that first vid.
Why didn't he club UP?
He has my sympathy!![]()

HH,
I seem to remember sitting on the hill behind the 18th green (par 3) at a course in Yamanashi thinking the same about you a couple of years ago. After the second or third ball went in I think you made the prudent decision of taking a miss on that hole.
Cheers

Sounds like one of those Miyako moments.
Seen a few of those from Jason as well.
But yeah, why didn't JD club up? He was nowhere near making it with the shots we could see....
I suspect JD's invitations may be thin on the ground next year after this latest episode. Apparently, he's down to 666th in the world rankings![]()
Learnt something from all this. In the movie "Tin Cup" Kevin Costner is supposedly down to his last ball, then DQ. Is that a "Hollywood" rule or a PGA rule or have the rules changed on how many balls you can use in a round.
Cheers

Read this on another site:
"Instead of asking the tournament officials for more golf balls (which is legal), he decided he had enough and walked off the course."
So, it seems he could've gotten more balls if he'd wanted to.

Good question - I recall when Tiger had one left (Pebble perhaps?) and Williams did not want to tell him in case he hooked a drive into the Pacific. That would run counter to the "ask an official" idea - so now I am going to look for it in the R&A Rules - a quck scan so far has found nothing, but I must dash off for a day at the Kirin Brewery- poor me!
A properly researched answer will appear even if I have to read some tarot cards![]()
BBC Sport - John Daly quits after hitting six balls into lake
The tournament director was quoted saying:
"Herden said running out of golf balls was no excuse for quitting in the middle of a round.
He added: "If you run out of golf balls and are acting in a professional manner, you would call the course officials and we would replenish his stock."
So, it looks like JD could've gotten more if he'd wanted to.
There was a separate incident on the previous hole, where a tv cameraman waited until John played out of a green-side bunker before telling him that he had played the wrong ball, and so incurring a penalty.
I think that probably pissed off John and so resulted in the 6 in the water and retiring from the tournament.
I kind of agree with that reaction, especially if you have a spectator deliberately wanting you to screw up...
Spike![]()
