Golf courses Japan - Our very own course directory!

• Looking for a new course to play but need some inspiration?
• Got a game arranged but don’t know the best way to get to the course?
• Want to read what fellow members think of other courses in Japan?
• Just played a round and want to rate or review the course to help other members?
• Want to see how other members have scored on a particular course?

If you answered yes, to any or all of the above questions then you’re going to find the latest addition to our virtual golf club very handy and enjoyable to use!

Here’s a lowdown on the system:

On the homepage you’ll see the following:

1. Course search:


Here you can quickly access a specific course if you know it’s name. Start typing and the smart search function will only show courses beginning with the same letters so you’ll be able to access a courses individual page very easily.

2. Select a Course


With the interactive map, you can search for courses by area and prefectu

3. Highest/Lowest rated courses


On the right hand side of the homepage, you can see the best and worst rated courses and there’s a handy prefecture filter as well.

4. Best/Last scores


And here you can see how other members have got on with their recent rounds.

5. Most recently added Course reviews


And finally, you can see the last 10 reviews that have been added to the database and can navigate to their main pages.

And welcome to the first English Wikipedia style directory of golf courses in Japan. If you’re logged in at the top, you’ll be able to see “Edit” buttons next to: Access, Google Map and Course Info. Help fellow members by adding the key information they need for choosing a golf course.

• Roughly how long does it take to get to a course?
• Where is it on the map for those who don’t have a car navi?
• Is it accessible by train? If so, how much does it cost?
• Does the club run a coach service from the nearest station?
• Does the course have a good driving range?
• Is there on-site accommodation?
• Do they have good membership schemes for international golfers?
• Do they have any English speaking staff?

Once you navigate to an individual courses page, you’ll see the following:

Ratings & Reviews

Warning:
Any edits made to this system are logged in the database. Anyone caught vandalizing this part of the system will be permanently banned from all parts of the website. The database is regularly backed up so course information is safe from any childish acts.


Rating or Reviewing a Course:


On this page, you can either give a course a quick rating, write a comment/review or do both. It’s up to you!

Rating a course:
Giving a course a rating is easy and only takes a few seconds.

There are 5 categories which you can give a rating out of 5 stars

Practice facilities:
Does the course have a full size driving range? A good bunker and chipping area? Or just a putting green?

Course Design:
How would you rate the design of the course? Up to championship standards? Fairways to narrow? Challenging greens or are they small and all too similar?

Course maintenance:
Are the greens in pristine conditions or pock-marked with 100’s of pitch marks?
Are the fairways like carpet or riddled with unrepaired divots?
Are the bunkers full of high quality sand or look they haven’t been topped up in months?

Hospitality:
How were the staff at the course? Attentive and friendly? Was the food good or just the usual clubhouse fare? Expensive or great value for money?

Value for money:
And overall, did you feel you got value for money for your days golf compared to other places you’ve played in Japan?

NB: You can only rate a course once every 12 months.

Review a course:
Here you can write as much or as little as you want. Whatever you feel needs to be said, please do so if you think others would like to know.

N.B: There is no time limit on writing comments or reviews so you can write more than one in the space of a year.

And finally:
When you are ready, click submit and your rating/review will be sent out into cyberspace for all to see.

I hope you enjoy using this part of the website.

There's still lots of work to be done on it and we're just working on improving the loading times at the moment but by all means, please have a look and start reviewing any courses you've played.

I wonder, do you know if there's some type of application that will allow golfers to show courses played by representation of a google maps thing?
Something like showing all places played in an actual map view with pushpins? Mousing over the pushpin to see one's score information. Maybe a bit way over the top, but it would be neat if we can show other members of GG where we played 'visually' (perhaps putting the map in our signature or profile).

I've personally made my own on Google Maps, but kinda wondering if you know of something more automated?


Also, Golfshots application for the iPhone is very useful and was wondering if there could be any way to tie in this application to GG somehow in the future?
It allows scores and statistics to be sent via email.

Anyways, just thoughts.

You can do that sort of thing with Google Maps probably but it would need to be done manually.

Found one guy who's doing something like that:
Google Golf Map – Ongoing Project

If Golfshot were agreeable to some kind of integration, I suspect they'd want to charge an arm and leg for the privelige and I doubt we have enough iPhone users for it to be viable anyway.

When the iPhone makes it onto the DoCoMo network (and actually gets a signal at most golf courses ), I'll look into this more deeply.

All it needs now is, as we say in Japan, to put "Tamashi" into it. Meaning, all you boys and girls out there, send in your reviews, ratings, criticism, praises etc.

Well, I know it's possible to receive the scores via email in .pdf. I suppose I could write an application to convert the PDF to text and then parse out the data in an easy format that could be imported into this current site's DB.

Yeah, right now, maybe not worth it, but, even if there's no GPS signal, golfers can still track their scores and statistics with the application. No GPS signal required for that.

Did you log in at the top of the frontpage?

Were you trying to add course information or a review?

Cheers for this Grant. A lot of work no doubt but it will be very useful.
